About:
History of the CRPF
India’s Union for Internal Security
The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) is the Union of India’s premier central police force for internal security. It is one of the oldest Central paramilitary forces, having been founded in 1939 as the Crown Representative Police (now termed as Central Armed Police Force). The CRPF was formed in response to the political unrest and agitations in the then-princely states of India following the Madras Resolution of the All-India Congress Committee in 1936, as well as the Crown Representative’s growing desire to assist the vast majority of native states in maintaining law and order as part of imperial policy.
On December 28, 1949, the force was renamed the Central Reserve Police Force by an Act of Parliament. This Act established the CRPF as a Union armed force. The then-Home Minister, Sardar Vallabh bhai Patel, envisioned a multi-faceted role for it in response to the changing needs of a newly independent nation. The CRPF Rules, as envisioned in the CRPF Act, were drafted in 1955 and published in the Indian Gazette on March 25, 1955. Shri V.G.Kanetkar was appointed as the first Director General of the CRPF.
