The Eco-park is India’s first initiative of its kind to promote eco-mine tourism. It was difficult to learn about the coal mining industry. But it is now! The Eco-Park, located in the scenic landscape of Saoner, about 40 kilometres from Nagpur, has not only simplified but also made the coal mining process enjoyable. It covers 6.35 hectares and promotes understanding of the coal mining industry and its contributions to nation building.
Western Coalfields Limited (WCL) has launched this innovative initiative to dispel myths about pollution and environmental degradation associated with coal and mining operations in India.
WCL offers tours of two active coal mines: the Saoner Underground Mine and the Gondegaon Opencast Mine. Between these two mines, an Eco-Park has been established where tourists can enjoy nature while also learning about the mining environment before entering the mines.
On March 27, 2016, Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi mentioned The Eco-Park at Saoner in his “Mann Ki Baat” programme. He expressed his gratitude and appreciation for WCL’s efforts in developing and implementing the Mine Tourism concept.
The Eco Mine Tourism Circuit provides natural habitat for the local flora and fauna. The Eco-Park is surrounded by four underground and one open cast coal mines. It uses mine water for gardening, water conservation, and recreation.
The park features several scientific models as well as a battery-operated toy train built by company employees out of mine scrap material. It also has an artificial mine tunnel and machines used in underground coal mines such as the Load-Haul-Dump (LHD), Side Discharge Loader (SDL), and Universal Drill Machine (UDM).
The park’s Eco Mine Museum, with its gallery and movie theatre, raises awareness about the history of coal formation, coal reserves, coal mining technologies, and other industry-related information. The Mahatma Gandhi Eco-souvenir Park’s shop, which is popular, sells products made by people with intellectual disabilities.
