About:
In the period 1947-1955, there was a flurry of scientific activity signalled by the establishment of a chain of national laboratories on the initiative of the Government of India. It was a happy coincidence that a scholarly statesman in the state of Uttar Pradesh was interested in nurturing the science of Astronomy – the mother of a number of other branches in fundamental sciences. The Uttar Pradesh State Observatory (UPSO) was founded primarily on the initiative of the late Dr. Sampurnanand, cabinet Minister of Education in Uttar Pradesh and later Chief Minister of the state.
Astrophysics and astronomy
The astronomy division is comprised of 15 active scientists and approximately 30 postdoctoral and PhD students. The division specialises in optical and near-infrared observations of celestial sources, but the researchers also use data from electromagnetic radiation, gravitational waves, neutrinos, and cosmic rays to gain a complete understanding of celestial phenomena in astrophysical terms. Analytical studies and numerical simulations of black hole jets and accretion discs are also carried out.

The Atmospheric Sciences Group’s research activities are geared toward a better understanding of the complex processes (physical, chemical, and dynamical) that govern the Earth’s atmosphere. The atmospheric research group was founded in 2002, with a modest beginning of observations of aerosol optical depth. Following that, measurements of BC, ozone, CO, NOy, CH4, SO2, NMHCs, CO2, N2O, and boundary layer meteorology (tower-based) are initiated. ARIES has also established a wind profiling facility that employs stratosphere troposphere radar (ST Radar), Lidar, and balloon-borne ozone observations.
Programs for Research
Surface observations of several trace gases, including greenhouse gases, are being made. Balloon-borne sensors are being used to measure the vertical distribution of ozone and meteorological parameters.
ARIES has a meteorological tower for boundary layer meteorology.
