Improving the academic quality of ICHR activities has been a top priority on the organization’s agenda. The Council’s objectives, as stated in the Memorandum of Association (MoA), are as follows:
a. To promote objective and scientific historical writing in order to instil an informed appreciation of the country’s national and cultural heritage;
b. Periodically review the progress of historical research and identify neglected or new areas where research should be prioritised;
c. To support historical research institutions and organisations by sponsoring historical research programmes;
d. To provide technical assistance to individuals or institutions in the development of historical research programmes, as well as to support institutional arrangements for research methodology training;
e. To establish and support historical research documentation and reference centers.
f. Keeping a National Register of historians and their fields of specialization;
g. To initiate measures, in collaboration with the State Archives and Regional Record Survey Committees, to locate, survey, list, and preserve historical material in private custody or institutions lacking the necessary facilities.
